Statement by Patricia De Lille Leader of GOOD
TIME FOR SOUTH AFRICANS TO REDUCE ESKOM DEPENDENCY
State must support migration of domestic users from national electricity grid. Every day, ordinary South Africans pay the cost of Eskom’s bumbling, mismanagement and corruption.
After 11 years of rolling blackouts, the best excuse the ruling party can muster is to blame the crisis on factions within its own ranks. While the rich have the option of installing generators and alternative power systems, poorer South Africans don’t have this comfort.
Eskom has been a disgrace since its establishment 96 years ago as a White Economic Empowerment enterprise to facilitate the industrial and domestic aspirations of the then-racist state. It is time for South Africans to turn their backs on this company.
GOOD will work with local and provincial governments that have not been captured by the ANC to implement policies to subsidise the costs of installing photovoltaic (solar) panels and inverters for all domestic users as a first step to the mass migration of domestic users from the national electricity grid.
There is no doubt that a majority of taxpayers will be more comfortable with a State that uses its income to empower citizens, themselves, rather than perpetually covering the bloated salaries and costs of a grossly under-performing electricity utility that is a relic of the past.
Phansi Eskom Phansi!
