VBS-STYLE CORRUPTION IN GEORGE, Western Cape: the DA protects implicated politician

Twenty years after Patricia de Lille exposed the Arms Deal corruption, she was again approached by ethical members of a government administration concerned about corrupt politicians.

Evidence was provided to her of a VBS-style investment and kickback scheme in the George Municipality, Western Cape. A forensic investigation led by an independent firm of attorneys pointed to the irregular transfers of hundreds of millions of Rands by the George Municipality to Old Mutual since 2017 (Click here).

Linked to those transfers are “handling fees” paid to the son of the DA Councillor D L Cronje, the Councillor responsible for the municipality’s finances (Click here).

The investigation indicates that when the kickback payments were discovered, there was an attempt at a cover up.

Action has been taken by the municipality against the Chief Financial Officer, but the Speaker of the DA-led Council instructed the municipal manager not to investigate the DA politician implicated (Click here), even though the evidence “seems to indicate that the son of [the] George Municipal Councillor gained financially” and the independent investigations recommended that action be taken.

South Africa’s Municipal Finance Management Act is clear in respect of any investments made by a municipality. This Act says that “no fee, commission or any other reward may be paid to a Councillor or a director or official of a municipality or to a spouse or close family member of such Councillor.”

After resolving to not investigate the implicated Councillor, the DA Council instead said that action will be taken against the Municipal Manager (Click here) – the person who laid the complaint with the Hawks (Click Here) and according to available evidence, attempted to stop the corrupt payments.

GOOD has handed the full dossier of information to the Office of the Public Protector and undertaken to deliver any further evidence that may emerge.

The ANC, EFF and DA must stop protecting corrupt politicians. The wheels of justice must be allowed to turn and corrupt politicians must be prosecuted and sent to prison.
